English Essay Writing Interactive

Course Synopsis

Being able to write effective, persuasive, and lucid essays is a vital skill that we all need, irrespective of the subject we study. Whether you’re thinking of applying for medicine, law, engineering, English, or any other subject, at some point in your academic career you will need to write extended pieces of writing to persuade or inform a tutor, and you will be expected to write to a high standard.

This course will guide you through the whole essay-writing process from analysis of the question through to writing an effective conclusion. It will teach you how to advance your argument effectively by employing certain linguistic techniques, how to plan efficiently, and how to use paragraphs to structure your essay successfully. By following the tactics and techniques taught in this course, you will be able to write a coherent and convincing essay. The course is aimed at speakers of foreign languages, but may also be a useful tool for English speakers looking to hone their essay writing skills.

  • Effectively answer the question
  • Use grammatical techniques to make an essay coherent and convincing

Syllabus

All courses include the following Interactive Tutorial series

Tutorial 1

Reading and Understanding an Essay Title

1-1.5 hrs

This tutorial will teach you to ‘unravel’ an essay question and really look in-depth at the question posed. This will involve analysing the phrases used, the vocabulary, and the grammar. Once this has been done, you can get a good idea as to the meaning or meanings in a title, at which point you will be in a position to begin answering the question.

Tutorial 2

How to Plan

1-1.5 hrs

This tutorial guides you through the planning stage of the essay-writing process. It will cover selecting and rejecting ideas, categorising them, and choosing in what order and framework to present them within the essay itself.

Tutorial 3

Structuring and Sentence Grammar

1-1.5 hrs

This tutorial will guide you through how to re-arrange your ideas and put them into effective paragraphs that will present your argument to its best advantage. The second part of the tutorial will examine the grammar of English essay writing – both the grammar within a sentence and the grammar of linking sentences.

Tutorial 4

Writing your Essay

1-1.5 hrs

This tutorial gathers all of the things that you have learnt so far in the course together in an attempt to write a full essay. By guiding you through how to create topic sentences that define paragraphs, how to link paragraphs together to form a cohesive whole, how to write an introductory paragraph, and how to write a conclusion, you should, by the end of the tutorial, be able to write your own effective essay.

One of the best e-learning courses on the subject currently available. Would definitely recommend to others (Cultural Anthropology)

It was a very useful and relevant experience that helped me review some contents, complementing my understanding of the subject. Overall, a very good, lively and complete extra-curricular activity which I wholeheartedly recommend. (An Introduction to Philosophy)

This course is great, fast paced, interesting and very entertaining. It gives a great overview of philosophy, and concise introduction to the main themes, but also leaves space for personal reflection and research which is always welcome! (Ethics: An Overview)

Louise, France
This course had a lot of interesting information on a very wide range of topics based on US history. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a basic overview of issues in 20th-century America. (20th-century American History)

Chalint (Greece)
The "Introduction to Law" course I took was excellent - I would recommend it to anyone wishing to apply to law school, or that is generally interested in the topic. Having completed the course, it leaves me wanting to study more of ORA's Law courses! (Introduction to Law)

Amelia (UK)
Victorian Classicism was an excellent course, which will be enjoyed by those interested in art history, greek mythology and British history as well as those with a great curiosity for traditions, morals and ethics during the 19th century. (Victorian Classicism)

Anne-Ly (Singapore)
After being out of high school and university for almost 10 years, the ORA Prep courses certainly helped in encouraging me to get back into uni as a mature student of Art History. I can hardly wait for the next academic challenge and I dearly hope anyone considering re-entering or visiting university for the first time comes across ORA Prep courses to build up their courage, too! Thank you, ORA! (Methodologies in Art History)

Anne-Ly (Singapore)
I'm very glad I discovered ORA Prep - it offers very interesting insights into the most varied subjects. I'm planning to enrol on other courses as well. I highly recommend it to anyone! (Ethics: An Overview)

Christina (Portugal)
It is an enjoyable course that gives a good introduction to ancient Greek architecture. Now I look to these amazing sites with a deeper understanding of their history. It encourages me to study these structures further! (Ancient Greek Architecture)
